O'MALLEY GEARING UP FOR FIGHT OVER NFL STADIUM SITE

     Although other L.A. sites are being considered for an NFL
stadium, none has "the history and the political complexity" of
Chavez Ravine and Dodger Stadium.  While Dodgers Owner Peter
O'Malley is interested in building a football stadium beside his
Dodger Stadium, the L.A. TIMES' notes the area has a history of
opposition from residents and environmentalists fearing further
congestion.  To combat this opposition, O'Malley has hired Nelson
Rising, a top exec for developer Maguire Thomas Partners who
persuaded "hostile homeowners to accept a once thoroughly
despised development, Playa Vista," near Marina del Ray.  Rising,
now President of Catellus Development Corp., has said he will
follow his "successful Playa Vista game plan" to negotiate with
residents.  Meanwhile, L.A. City Councilman Mike Hernandez said
he will insist on major concessions from O'Malley including
traffic improvements (L.A. TIMES, 4/14).
