NEW TWINS STADIUM TALKS TO COMMENCE THIS WEEK

A new Twins stadium initiative will be "revived this week,
despite disagreements over who should represent the public and
about the scope of the deal," according to Jay Weiner in this
morning's Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE. Morrie Anderson, Chief of
Staff for MN Gov. Arne Carlson, said he and Henry Savelkoul,
Chair of the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission, will
serve as chief negotiators in working out a deal with the Twins.
Anderson would like to get a deal by July to present to the
Legislature in January. Savelkoul notes any process must include
"broader legislative involvement" after the Legislature rejected
a referendum last session. He also notes any deal "won't exist"
without paying off of the Metrodome's $37M mortgage and "some
accommodation with the Vikings." Savelkoul added a Twins deal,
"especially if the new park is in Minneapolis, might also have to
be linked to the attraction of an NHL team to St. Paul"
(Minneapolis STAR-TRIBUNE, 4/15).
