U.S. WEST ANNOUNCES ACQUISITION OF CONTINENTAL CABLEVISION

     U.S. West, the CO-based Baby Bell, announced yesterday they
will pay $10.8B for Continental Cablevision of Boston, the
nation's third largest cable carrier with a base of 4.2 million
subscribers (Jon Auerbach, BOSTON GLOBE, 2/28).  With the deal,
the combined company would own or share management of cable
systems in 60 of the top 100 markets (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION,
2/28).  The deal is the first "superdeal of the new
telecommunications era" (Jon Van, CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 2/28).
Continental Cablevision holds 10.4% of Primestar Partners, 17.5%
of Prime Sports and 20% of The Golf Channel (N.Y. TIMES, 2/28).
