TSN EYES NBA DEAL TO BRING MORE AIR UP THERE

TSN is in "serious negotiations" with the NBA for a complete
Canadian basketball package next season, according the Toronto
GLOBE & MAIL. David Langford writes while TSN "underestimated
the basketball interest in this country," the NBA "failed to
understand the Canadian market." The league thought of TSN as
"being closer" to ESPN than TNT, according to one insider. Ken
Derrett, Dir of Marketing and Media for NBA Canada: "Our
interest is to grow the league and the sport. That's why you see
the teams marketing their product in their own area first. We
have to create demand" (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 2/22).
