Throwback Thursday: A Season On Ice

"NHL teams will not play at the expiration of the CBA until we have a new system that fixes the economic problems facing our game." Those words from NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, uttered 13 years ago this week, marked the official start of the '04-05 lockout, which erased an entire season and resulted in 1,230 unplayed games. Bettman went on to urge the NHLPA to "stop the posturing." Then-NHLPA Exec Dir Bob Goodenow responded, "An honest partnership can never be achieved under the League’s ‘my way or the highway’ approach." But Bettman also struck an optimistic tone, saying, "We will have a future and a bright future, and we will grow this game."
