IOC Appoints Ruggiero To Ethics Commission; Ban Ki-moon To Chair

American IOC member Angela Ruggiero has won a seat on the organization's Ethics Commission, a quasi-independent body with jurisdiction over corruption allegations against individual members. Her term on the panel lasts through '21, even though her term as an IOC member expires in February. The IOC also appointed former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to chair the Ethics Commission. Ban said, "I will work very closely with the IOC members and all the sport organizations to make the IOC have trust and confidence from the international community."

Several IOC members used the appointment votes as an opportunity to air complaints about corruption charges levied against some high-profile members in recent months, including allegations that honorary member Carlos Nuzman was involved in a vote-buying scandal. "We continue to suffer terrible weather in the IOC and my wish is that we are not affected by these storms any more," said Belgian member Pierre-Olivier Beckers.
