White House Unveils New Initiatives On Sports And Climate Change

The White House Office of Science & Technology Policy today announced several new actions by federal agencies and sports organizations as part of its call to take action on climate change through sports. Highlights include:

• The Department of Energy, in partnership with the Green Sports Alliance, will hold a workshop in November at M&T Bank Stadium that will bring together stadium and arena owners and operators to examine and identify opportunities and challenges in advancing the design, construction and operation of facilities. A report will be released following the workshop.

• The State Department will work with U.S. Embassies and Consulates worldwide and its sports diplomacy division to send sports envoys oversees to hold clinics and participate in events, with an emphasis on the importance of leadership and respect for diversity. The division will support at least five programs on the environment in the next two years.

• The NHL, in conjunction with league partner Constellation, will launch the Greener Rinks initiative, which will aim to measure and evaluate the environmental impact of the greater hockey community.

• The USTA will launch its first-ever environmental messaging campaign targeting individual and organization members across the U.S. It will highlight the work being done at the US Open as well as the new USTA National Campus.
