Amazon.com earlier today announced a new digital streaming video device, Fire TV, designed to compete against current connected-TV competitors such as Apple TV, Roku and Google's Chromecast. Sports content was featured prominently in Amazon's presentation unveiling the device, with properties and networks operating channels on Fire TV including MLB, NBA, ESPN, WWE and the ACC Digital Network. The device, a small square box available immediately, carries a $99 price tag. Amazon is trying to differentiate its product with a voice-activated feature not available on the competing set-top boxes, as well as a heavy focus on gaming that includes an optional, $39.99 add-on controller.
