Maryland Jockey Club Raises Preakness Stakes Purse To $1.5M

The Maryland Jockey Club today announced that that the purse for the Preakness Stakes has been raised to $1.5M, up from $1M. This marks the "first purse increase" for the Triple Crown event since it was raised from $500,000 to $1M in '98. The MJC in a press release noted the Preakness is one of 17 stakes events out of 26 total races the same weekend. With the increase, the total value of the "stakes program over the two-day period" rises to nearly $4M (DRF.com, 12/12).
