TEN-DAY FOOTBALL HOF FESTIVITIES UNDERWAY IN CANTON

The '02 Football Hall of Fame Festival is underway in Canton, OH.  There are 20 scheduled events for the ten-day festival, including hot air balloons, a fashion show luncheon and a drum corps competition, with estimates of 700,000 people attending the various festivities.  Overall, the event is expected to have a $10-12M economic impact on the Canton area.  The highlight will be the induction of coach George Allen, TE Dave Casper, DL Dan Hampton, QB Jim Kelly and WR John Stallworth to the HOF.  Canton officials expect a crowd of 11,000 or more for the induction ceremonies, which will take place at Canton's Fawcett Stadium (NFL.com, 7/29). 

ESPN will televise the induction ceremony live on Saturday at noon ET.  The show will also be broadcast live on www.profootballhof.com and be available on a tape-delay basis on ESPN Classic as part of the net's seven-hour block of HOF-related coverage.  Beginning at 2:30pm ET, ESPN Classic will show career highlights of all five inductees, and the net will conclude its coverage with the rebroadcast of the induction ceremony.  On Monday, ABC will broadcast the Giants-Texans Hall of Fame game, which will be the debut for the Al Michaels-John Madden broadcast team.  Coverage begins at 8:00pm ET (THE DAILY).

FOUNDING FATHERS: MLS ALL-STAR WEEKEND INVADES DC

The '02 MLS All-Star weekend will be held on Saturday at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC, from 3:30-5:30pm ET.  Weekend events begin tonight with the Pepsi MLS All-Star Soccer Fest at MD SoccerPlex.  The MLS All-Stars will hold an open practice at the SoccerPlex Saturday morning at 10:45am ET, and members from both the MLS and U.S. All-Star squads will participate in three autograph sessions throughout the day (THE DAILY).

Meanwhile, ABC announced that the network's first-ever stereo broadcast of the All-Star Game will utilize bench, sideline and goalmouth microphones, wireless microphones and underground "Turf Mics."  The game also features the debut of a new graphics and animation package produced by Winnercomm that will be used on all MLS broadcasts for the remainder of this season and through '03 (THE DAILY).


TICKETS HERE: SPORTING NEWS ENTERS DEAL WITH LIQUIDSEATS

The Sporting News today announced an agreement with LiquidSeats to provide the StubHub Ticket Marketplace product on SportingNews.com.  The StubHub Ticket Marketplace allows season ticket holders to resell unused tickets for all live events directly to other fans (THE DAILY).


BUZZER BEATERS

Staples announced today the launch of its charitable foundation, Staples Foundation for Learning.  Rangers SS Alex Rodriguez will participate in an official ceremony today at The Ballpark in Arlington, TX, in honor of the unveiling (THE DAILY). 

The Padres' Int'l Weekend Celebration begins today with the team's six-game homestand and will feature tributes to the city's diverse background.  The Celebration will include live music and dancing, as well as arts and crafts.  Pregame events on Padres Street begin at 5:00pm PT today and tomorrow, and at noon PT on Sunday (THE DAILY).

The SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER reports that fans 14 and under "will receive a 7-inch-tall Edgar Martinez bank tonight," a promotion being run "concurrently with a wishing well on the main concourse in center field."  All money will be donated to Children's Hospital (SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER, 8/2).


WEEKEND EVENTS

Friday

As part of the Gravity Games, recording artist Wyclef Jean will perform at 6:30pm ET at North Coast Harbor in Cleveland (THE DAILY).

The Braves will hold their annual "Foundation Weekend" at Turner Field today and tomorrow, a fundraising event that sells team memorabilia for charity (THE DAILY).

The WNBA Mystics will host a slumber party for the Girl Scouts of America following their 7:00pm ET game against the Fire.  Meanwhile, the first 12,000 fans in attendance will receive a collectible Pez Dispenser (THE DAILY).

Raptors F Vince Carter will host his Charity All-Star Basketball Game at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto.  The event, which begins at 7:30pm ET, is part of Carter's Summer Jam Fundraiser.  Proceeds from the event will benefit local children's charities through Carter's Embassy of Hope Foundation (THE DAILY).


Saturday

The Redskins will open FedEx Field to the public at 7:00pm ET for fans to watch the American Bowl game against the 49ers on the stadium's big screen.  While admission is free, fans must register at the team's Web site to attend (THE DAILY).

Del Mar Thoroughbred Club will host "Donuts at Del Mar," an event that offers fans the opportunity to meet various jockeys and trainers.  In addition to a Q&A session hosted by track announcer Trevor Denman, fans will be entertained by face painters and clowns (THE DAILY).

The Chargers will host Fan Fest '02 from 2:00-5:00pm PT at the team's training center in La Jolla, CA (THE DAILY).

The NFL Panthers will host their version of Fan Fest from 1:30-5:30pm ET at Ericsson Stadium (THE DAILY).


Sunday

Red Wings C Igor Larionov, C Pavel Datsyuk and D Maxim Kuznetsov will take the Stanley Cup on a four-day trip to Russia.  Datsyuk will bring the Cup to a charity hockey event with the Dynamo Energy Hockey Club in Ekaterinburg before Larionov and Kuznetsov take it to their hometowns (THE DAILY).

The inaugural N.Y. Cycling Championship will feature Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong (THE DAILY).

Hawks F Shareef Abdur-Rahim will sponsor his second annual Back to School Rally from 1:00-4:00pm ET at the John P. Milner Youth Sports Complex in East Point, GA (THE DAILY).

Elton Brand will conduct "Elton Brand Youth Day" at Riverfront Green Park in Peekskill, NY, from 9:30am-4:00pm ET (THE DAILY).

The WNBA Lynx will host the Lynx' Celebrity Jam basketball game, featuring Coolio and Ashton Kutcher, at 2:30pm CT at the Target Center (THE DAILY).
