MCENROE-BECKER MATCH ADDED TO U.S. OPEN "SUPER SATURDAY"

The USTA today announced the addition of a John McEnroe-Boris Becker "Challenge Match" to its U.S. Open "Super Saturday" lineup on September 7. The match, scheduled for 7:00pm ET, will precede the Women's Singles Championship at 8:30pm. Potential TV coverage is being discussed.

The USTA also announced the unveiling of the official '02 U.S. Open theme art, designed by award-winning artist Douglas Fraser. The artwork pays tribute to both the U.S. and the city of N.Y. It can be viewed at http://www.usta.com/misc/themeart/index.html (THE DAILY).


WORLD CUP COSTS EXPECTED TO AFFECT ADIDAS Q2 LOSSES

REUTERS reports that a "hefty bill for the World Cup" is set to hurt adidas-Salomon in Q2 when the company unveils its results on Wednesday. adidas "is expected to post a four percent decline in net profit" to $22.59M. The company already said that it "expects extra costs to depress second-quarter profits, although it expects an improvement in the second half of the year." Shares of adidas were trading at $76.20, reflecting zero change, in late afternoon trading (REUTERS, 8/5).


GOING PUBLIC: GOLF MAGAZINE LISTS TOP 100 PUBLIC COURSES

Golf Magazine releases its biennial list of the "Top 100 You Can Play" in its September issue, which hits newsstands on August 13. Pebble Beach retains the No. 1 position, while the year-old Pacific Dunes in Bandon, OR, enters the list at No. 2. Below are the top five golf courses on the list (THE DAILY):

BANK SHOT: SPONSOR TO HOST TIMBERWOLVES PRESEASON GAME

The T'Wolves and U.S. Bank today announced that the team will host a preseason game against the Celtics in Cedar Rapids, IA, on October 19 at U.S. Cellular Center. The game will be billed as the U.S. Bank Classic. U.S. Bank has been a sponsor of the team since '89 (THE DAILY).

The Baltimore SUN reports that Triple A Int'l League Rochester Red Wings GM Dan Mason agreed last Wednesday to "sleep in a tent in the Red Wings' bullpen until they won a game. Rochester lost again [on Sunday], setting a Red Wings record for consecutive defeats at 12" (Baltimore SUN, 8/5).

The HOUSTON CHRONICLE reports that KTRK-ABC in Houston "has 16 people on hand to produce hour-long pre-game and postgame shows" surrounding tonight's "MNF"broadcast, featuring John Madden's debut with Al Michaels (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 8/5).

The DES MOINES REGISTER cites a "full-page spread" in the current issue of the National Enquirer that states, "Tom Arnold, the wacky comic who endured a stormy four-year marriage to Roseanne, will reveal in his autobiography that he has a new burning ambition – to be governor of Iowa" (DES MOINES REGISTER, 8/5).


TONIGHT'S EVENTS

The GREEN BAY PRESS-GAZETTE reports that "more than 5,000 people are expected to turn out tonight" when NASCAR's Dale Earnhardt Jr. visits Ashwaubenon, WI's entertainment district located east of Lambeau Field. Earnhardt Jr. will conduct a Q&A session at 6:00pm CT, race in four interactive races at 6:30pm, and participate in a private autograph session at 7:00pm (GREEN BAY PRESS-GAZETTE, 8/5).

USA Basketball Men's Senior National Team Committee Chair Stu Jackson will moderate a media teleconference call at 6:00pm ET. Jackson will be joined by Hornets G Baron Davis, who recently was added to the USA World Championship Team roster in place of an injured Jason Kidd (THE DAILY).

The Patriots have called a press conference today at 5:00pm ET to discuss naming right at the new facility. Afterwards, the team will host a practice at 7:00pm ET for luxury box and club seat holders (THE DAILY).

The S.F. Board of Supervisors will consider whether to grant the naming rights of San Francisco Stadium at Candlestick Point to the 49ers. Supervisors also will consider a companion plan regarding the sale of advertising inside the stadium (S.F. CHRONICLE, 8/5).

The CINCINNATI ENQUIRER's Neil Schmidt writes that men's professional tennis is "enduring an identity crisis," as parity and a lack of stars has the sport in transition (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER).

The N.Y. TIMES BOOK REVIEW's Hugo Lindgren reviews John McEnroe's memoir "You Cannot Be Serious." Referring to the memoir, written with James Kaplan, as "a pretty appealing book," Lindgren writes "the prose is readable and engaging, if inartfully colloquial at times" (N.Y. TIMES).

The OH NEWS-HERALD's Matt Trem highlights the "total team effort by more than 1,500 people" that worked for the better part of '02 to make the Gravity Games a success in Cleveland (OH NEWS-HERALD).
