MLB ALL-STARS GET ANIMATED FOR TV SPOTS DEBUTING SATURDAY

MLB will debut two TV spots on Saturday's "MLB on Fox" broadcast promoting the 73rd All-Star Game and Century 21 Home Run Derby.  Created by McCann-Erickson, the spots feature superhero caricatures of certain players drawn by artist Trevor McCarthy, including Red Sox P Pedro Martinez, Rangers SS Alex Rodriguez, Yankees SS Derek Jeter, Giants OF Barry Bonds, Mariners OF Ichiro Suzuki, Cubs OF Sammy Sosa, D'Backs P Randy Johnson and Yankees 1B Jason Giambi (THE DAILY).

ESPN TO DEDICATE PROGRAMMING TO TITLE IX 30TH ANNIVERSARY

ESPN this weekend will devote almost 40 hours to women's related sports programming in recognition of the 30th anniversary of Title IX.  The "Women & Sports Weekend" on ESPN includes:

Saturday:

5:00pm ET: An hour-long documentary called "On Equal Ground," chronicling the '96 landmark Title IX case of Cohen v. Brown University.

8:00pm ET: "The Battle of Title IX," a one-hour documentary examining the evolution of Title IX and the controversy it's engendered and the gender equity issues that remain in sports today.

9:00pm ET: An hour-long ESPN town meeting, live from the Bushnell Center for Performing Arts in Hartford. Panelists include UConn women's basketball coach Geno Auriemma; Olympic swimmer and Title IX attorney Nancy Hogshead; Jessica Gavora, a policy advisor for U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft; ESPN football analyst Bill Curry; PGA Tour Senior VP/TV Productions & New Media Donna Orender; and LPGA Tour Commissioner Ty Votaw.

Other programs:

WTA tennis, LPGA golf, WNBA, women's boxing on Friday night fights, PWBA bowling, women's pro billiards, track and field, World's Strongest Women.

ESPN Classic will air replays of the '99 Women's World Cup U.S. soccer victory over China, the Billie Jean King vs. Bobby Riggs "Battle of the Sexes" and the Oklahoma-UConn '02 NCAA women's basketball national championship game (HARTFORD COURANT, 6/21).


OH WORLD CUP VIEWING PARTY HOSTS OVER 7,500 THIS MORNING

The "Best Buy Viewing Parties" at Crew Stadium's "Cup Headquarters" hosted over 7,500 patrons for the U.S. men's soccer team's 1-0 loss to Germany this morning.  The game was screened in two main areas of the facility: a 60x160 foot semi-permanent tent stadium club that seats 1,500, and a grassy area north of the stadium club that showed the match on a 13x17 foot mobile video board.  The live event was covered by all three network morning programs: CBS' "The Early Show," ABC's "Good Morning America" and NBC's "Today" (THE DAILY). 

Meanwhile, according to preliminary audience estimates from Nielsen Media Research, over 36 million people worldwide watched England defeat Argentina on June 7, making it the most watched World Cup match for the week of June 3-9.  The chart below presents the most watched matches in each of the 17 countries measured by Nielsen for the week of June 3-9 (Nielsen Media Research):

“TAG,” YOU'RE IT: NIKE SPOTS IN RUNNING FOR GRAND PRIX AWARDS

USA TODAY reports the winner for "the world's best TV commercial is coming down to a photo finish," as the "contenders for the Cannes Lions Grand Prix in Film (TV and cinema ads) look closely matched."  The award will be announced Saturday.  Among "the most-talked-about work" includes spots for Nike, which  "has several ads in the running," including ''Tag,'' which has an adult version of the kids' game played on city streets and subways and ''Shade Running," which features a woman runner whose game is to avoid the sun (USA TODAY, 6/21).


WNBA A POWERPUFF LEAGUE? YES, BUT FOR ONE MONTH ONLY

Beginning tonight, the WNBA will team-up with the Cartoon Network to present "Powerpuff Girls Movie Night."  The members of the Powerpuff Girls – Bubbles, Buttercup and Blossom – will be on hand to screen a trailer for the upcoming movie prior to the game, and the first 2,500 attendees to each game will receive Powerpuff Girls movie posters.  Below, view a complete schedule of "Powerpuff Girls Movie Night" events (THE DAILY):

TSN's new national NHL deal will get its official start on Saturday with five hours of coverage of the league draft beginning at 1:00pm ET (OTTAWA SUN, 6/21).

A's Ps Mark Mulder, Tim Hudson and Barry Zito will host "This Week In Baseball" on Fox.  Check your local listing for air times (THE DAILY).

The HARTFORD COURANT reports that Clippers F Elton Brand and 76ers C Dikembe Mutombo were in Bristol, CT, on Thursday to film promotional commercials for ESPN's "SportsCenter."  Brand discussed his ESPN viewing habits, saying, "It depends, if I'm doing well, I watch a lot.  If I don't, then I don't watch because they can get on you a little bit."  One of Brand's spots will be used to promote the 25,000th "SportsCenter" show, scheduled to air August 25 at 11:00pm ET (HARTFORD COURANT, 6/21).

The Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year (SAMMY) Award celebration will be held on Saturday at Disney's Wide World of Sports.  A panel consisting of Kurt Warner, Cal Ripken Jr., Marion Jones, Mia Hamm, Pete Sampras and Tony Hawk chose the 25 scholar-athletes from a record 30,000 applicants to receive a $7,500 scholarship, a spot in a milk mustache ad that will run in USA Today, SI and ESPN Magazine and induction to the SAMMY Hall of Fame (THE DAILY).


WEEKEND EVENTS

Saturday

The Capitals will host their 3rd annual Draft-Day Party at Dave & Buster's in the White Flint Mall in Bethesda, MD.  The 11:00am ET event will allow fans to meet current and former players, team broadcasters and local celebrities (THE DAILY).

The Predators will host their 5th annual Draft-Day Party at the Wildhorse Saloon in downtown Nashville.  The 11:00am ET event will allow fans to meet Predator Andy Delmore and local celebrities, while the first 500 guests will receive a Predators rally towel (THE DAILY).

The Flames will host a Select-A-Seat event at the Pengrowth Saddledome from 8:00am-5:00pm.  Prospective season-ticket buyers can select their seats for the '02-03 season, as well as watch the NHL Draft and tour the Flames dressing room (THE DAILY).

Padres 3B Phil Nevin and P Trevor Hoffman are leading a group of Padres, Yankees and Chargers players in the Nevin-Hoffman Bowling Bash at Brunswick Premier Lanes in San Diego at 6:00pm PT.  Nevin, Hoffman, 1B Ryan Klesko, CF Mark Kotsay, manager Bruce Bochy, Yankees 1B Jason Giambi, OF John Vander Wal, Chargers QB Drew Brees and FSN's Tom Arnold will bowl to raise money for "Buckle Up" and for the children of late Padres OF Mike Darr (THE DAILY).

Former Blue Jays President Paul Beeston, former Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston and Blue Jays Founder and former Labatt exec Don McDougall will be inducted into the Canadian Baseball HOF, along with Dave Shury, Bill Slack and Harry Simmons (AP, 6/18).

Cowboys WR Raghib Ismail will perform with his band, 3 Sons of Thunder, during halftime of the AFL Storm-Desperados game.  Ismail and two bandmates, called the Dynamic Twins, will perform their first single, "Bounce," off their first CD, "The Reign Cometh" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 6/21).

The Seahawks will host a tent sale in the north parking lot of the new stadium beginning at 8:00am PT, or 7:00am PT for season ticket holders.  All merchandise and equipment with the team's old logo and colors will be available at reduced prices (THE DAILY).


Sunday

Bulls F Tyson Chandler and C Eddy Curry are among the participants in the 1st annual "Running With The Bulls."  The 9:30am CT 8K run begins at the United Center.  All proceeds from the event benefit CharitaBulls (THE DAILY).


IN OTHER NEWS….

Circuit City has stopped selling VHS movies at some stores and will soon discontinue sales at other stores.  The electronics retailer is "phasing out sales of videotape movies as the chain makes way for the inevitability of DVD."  Circuit City is the first national retailer to "sound such a clear death knell for videotape and the VCR," citing "steadily increasing consumer hunger for DVDs" (WASHINGTON POST, 6/21).
