JETER TO CHALLENGE STONE STATUES IN NEW GATORADE TV ADS

BRANDWEEK reports that Gatorade "will launch the latest in its series of TV ads for its Fierce line" with a spot featuring Yankees SS Derek Jeter during MLB's 73rd All-Star Game on July 9. The 30-second spot, "Visitors" from Element 79, Chicago, is "set in a Gotham City-type setting," and stone statues "come to life to challenge Jeter to a game of baseball." Gatorade is an MLB sponsor (BRANDWEEK, 6/24 issue).


MAPLE LEAFS, CANADIENS POST-SEASON PLAY BOOSTS CBC RATINGS

The CBC drew the highest TV ratings for the NHL playoffs since '93, courtesy of postseason success of the Maple Leafs and Canadiens. CBC's "Hockey Night in Canada" broadcasts drew an average 1,981,000 viewers in the playoffs, up 32% from a year ago. In '93, the network drew an average 2,012,000 viewers (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 6/24).


FSN CELEBRATES WITH ITS “BEST DAMN” DATING SERVICE, PERIOD

FSN's "Best Damn Sports Show Period" will celebrate its one-year anniversary with an "All-Star Summer" of programming, beginning tonight and running through July 19. Two interactive contests, including "Win A Date With A Cheerleader," will highlight the promotion. Viewers who sign up online can submit a video through the mail to win a date with one of four pro cheerleaders. The dates will be televised throughout the "All-Star Summer," with uncut footage available on FOXSports.com (THE DAILY).


IN THE BAG: INVENTORY FOR THIS YEAR'S ESPY AWARDS GIFT BAG

The gift bags given to presenters and nominees at the 10th annual ESPY Awards – scheduled for July 10 – will include a spa certificate to Amadeus Spa, a suite for a weekend at an Ian Schrager hotel, a DVD collection from Walt Disney, one year bi-coastal membership to the Sports Club/LA, a Discover to Go card, dinner for two at Hama Sushi in the Staples Center during a Lakers, Clippers or Kings game night, Siemens cell phone and car kit, Spy sunglasses, Cedarburg Candles, a Sony Playstation 2 with releases of 989 sports games, a free Jamba Juice a week for a year and Lois Hill Jewelry (THE DAILY).


SEAHAWKS STADIUM LAUNCHES NEW HOMEBASE ON THE INTERNET

With details of the Seahawks Stadium's grand opening scheduled for August, the team's redesigned SeahawksStadium.com has launched and will provide fans with details on the opening, as well as Seahawks Exhibition Center events, facility rental information, and tickets to Seahawks games and other local events (THE DAILY).

DAILY VARIETY reports that Brazil's 2-1 quarterfinal victory over England on Friday morning "drew almost 17 million viewers, the biggest morning audience on any U.K. channel for 10 years" (DAILY VARIETY, 6/24).

Delta Air Lines and the Mets announced that they have teamed for the "Delta Getaway Game," which will offer baseball fans and SkyMiles members an all-expense paid trip from NY's JFK airport to S.F. to attend two Mets-Giants games on August 21 and August 22 (THE DAILY).

Electronic Arts Inc. today announced the release of "F1 2002" for the Nintendo GameCube. "F1 2002" is the first Formula One game to feature drivers and teams from the '02 season (THE DAILY).

The AP reports that a Swiss investigation of FIFA President Sepp Blatter "continues [today] despite the withdrawal of a criminal complaint against him" by members of FIFA's exec committee. Eleven members of FIFA's 24-man exec committee "filed the complaint in a Zurich court last month on the basis of a document from FIFA General Secretary Michel Zen-Ruffinen alleging corruption and financial mismanagement" (AP, 6/24).

NBC today inked a $50M deal with Donald Trump to "become the mogul's new beauty pageant partner." Under the five-year deal, NBC "will pay Trump $10 million per year to broadcast the three pageants" starting in '03 (DAILY VARIETY, 6/24).

Vivendi Universal today said that it will "sell a stake of up to 15.6 percent in utilities company Vivendi Environnement," which will "dilute Vivendi Universal's holding in Vivendi Environnement from 63 percent to 42 percent and should help Vivendi Universal shave [$1.65B] off its debt" of $32.4B (AP, 6/24).

The AP reports that shares of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia "fell precipitously, hitting its historic low" today as concerns about her links to an insider trading investigation were "stoked by the suspension of her stockbroker by Merrill Lynch." The stock was trading at $12.99, down 18.66%, in late afternoon trading (AP, 6/24).

DAILY VARIETY reports that the Nielsen numbers have "body-slammed" WWE Chair Vince McMahon as "Smackdown" has lost 35% of its 12-to-17-year-old males for the first 5 1/2 months of the year compared with the same period in '01. The two-hour series on UPN "has also seen its household ratings fall by 10%" (DAILY VARIETY, 6/24).
