Game Changers

Alanna Frisby Hernandez, Wasserman

David Hernandez

It may be hard to find a better example of a Game Changer than Alanna Frisby Hernandez, who changed her own career path.

After graduating from Columbia law school and beginning her career as a commercial litigator in New York City, Frisby Hernandez made a seismic career shift. With no sports experience, the young professional interviewed for a position at Wasserman and dove headfirst into the industry.

“The argument that I sort of made for the position that I took,” she explained, “was, ‘Listen, I see things when deals fall apart, when relationships don’t work, and what you guys are looking for is somebody that can protect the clients so that your deals don’t fall apart, or if they do, to find creative solutions to try to bridge the gap between parties.’”

In her eight years at Wasserman, Frisby Hernandez has been influential in contracts like Giancarlo Stanton’s mega-deal with the Miami Marlins and Anthony Davis’ extension with Nike. She also played a key role in acquisitions like that of NFL-focused Worldwide Sports and international basketball firms SSEM and BBaltics.

One thing Hernandez is on the lookout for? NIL.

More about Alanna

Biggest work and/or home life adjustment during the pandemic: I’ve learned to schedule everything into my calendar: time for myself so I can take a walk or ride my Peloton; time to grab a coffee with my husband; time to put my daughter down for a nap or play outside with her. It’s way too easy to lose track of time otherwise.

Best advice I’ve received for career development: Always stay curious, always be prepared and don’t be afraid to say yes to opportunities that may scare you.

Proudest professional achievement in current position: Negotiating inclusion riders into several agreements for our clients and continuing to push to make this the norm.

I wish I’d known at my career’s start: There is no right path to take to reach your goals. The road is often windy with stops and starts, but it is important to make the most out of every part of the trip.
