Turnstile boost at SunTrust

Attendance at SunTrust Park is up 38 percent from the same point last year at Turner Field, according to an Atlanta Journal-Constitution report. The other 14 MLB teams that have opened new stadiums since 2000 posted an average attendance increase of 28 percent in their first full seasons in their new homes.

BUFFALO
Grocer helps Bisons mark 30th

Tops Friendly Markets signed on as the presenting sponsor for the Buffalo Bisons’ 30th season at Coca-Cola Field. Tops will tie into a number of special in-game promotions, including those set for July 30 and Aug. 30, where replica championship banners from the 1997, 1998 and 2004 seasons will be distributed to fans. The Bisons are the Class AAA affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays.

COLUMBIA, S.C.
Arena getting Daktronics upgrades

The University of South Carolina selected Daktronics to design, manufacture and install a 12-display, center-hung system and ribbon displays at Colonial Life Arena on campus. The new system will feature four convex-curved main displays, 12 feet high by 20 feet wide and capable of variable content zoning.

COLUMBUS
Women’s hoops starts, ends in city

Ohio State University and the city of Columbus are not only hosting the 2018 Women’s Final Four but also playing host to the Countdown to Columbus event on the season’s opening weekend Nov. 10-12. The event will feature Ohio State, UConn, Stanford and Louisville playing at Nationwide Arena and St. John Arena.

Red Bulls offer sensory-friendly zone

The New York Red Bulls became the first MLS club and only the second team in North American professional sports to have a permanent sensory-friendly space. The team converted an office space at Red Bull Arena into a permanent area for families affected by autism. The space at midfield will be available at all New York Red Bulls matches at no additional charge.

U.S. Open showing at Topgolf

The U.S. Golf Association, Topgolf and Fox Sports have partnered for a live U.S. Open viewing experience at all 30 Topgolf venues in the U.S. From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, participants will be able to view first-round play from the tournament at Erin Hills on all of Topgolf’s in-venue monitors on FS1, with the coverage switching to the Fox broadcast network from 6 to 9 p.m.

KANSAS CITY
Royals, KCP&L say ‘Cops Are Topps’

The Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Power & Light Co. unwrapped their new Cops Are Topps baseball card program. Each card features photos of Royals players on the front, while providing important safety tips on the back. Children are encouraged to ask uniformed officers for cards when they are not in emergency situations.

3 Point to produce BET hoops event

3 Point Productions is partnering with BET Networks for the third time to produce the in-venue fan experience for the BET Experience Celebrity Basketball Game presented by Sprite and State Farm. The game takes place June 24 as part of BET Experience at L.A. Live presented by Coca-Cola.

MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL
Wolves, Lynx tap AEG Merchandise

The Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx reached a new partnership with AEG Merchandise to manage all team retail operations. After completion of the Target Center’s renovation, the team store in the skyway will be doubled in square footage and a second store will be added on the lower-level concourse.

PHILADELPHIA
Street section renamed ‘Ed Snider Way’

Philadelphia renamed a section of 11th Street in South Philadelphia running between Wells Fargo Center and Lincoln Financial Field as “Ed Snider Way” as a tribute to the late founder and former chairman of the Philadelphia Flyers and Comcast Spectacor. Snider died last year after a battle with cancer.

USGA picks Merion for Curtis Cup
The U.S. Golf Association selected Merion Golf Club to host Curtis Cup matches in 2022. The Curtis Cup features teams of amateur women golfers representing teams from the United States, Great Britain and Ireland. The event will mark the 19th USGA championship to be played at Merion, the most of any golf club in the country.

Flyers employ NormaTec for recovery
The Philadelphia Flyers teamed with NormaTec to establish an official Recovery Room powered by NormaTec for their players. The room features NormaTec Pulse Pro Systems for the players to use before and after training to rejuvenate muscle tissue, increase circulation, rehab from pain and soreness and ultimately speed up the recovery process.

Ryan Howard joins venture capital firm
Former Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard joined the Ranor, Pa., venture capital firm SeventySix Capital as a partner. The firm said Howard, who was recently released by an Atlanta Braves minor league affiliate, will work with the firm’s entrepreneurs and investors.

Rugby finals smash attendance record
The June 3-4 Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championship at Talen Energy Stadium broke the event’s two-day attendance record with 37,518 on hand. The number bested last year’s record of 27,224. Saturday’s crowd of 14,973 set the one-day attendance record.

Lionel Messi theme park planned

Chinese fans will be able to celebrate the achievements of FC Barcelona player Lionel Messi at a new theme park to be built in Beijing, according to a Reuters report. The Messi Experience Park, which is being launched by the five-time world player of the year in collaboration with Chinese broadcaster Phoenix Group and Spanish media company Mediapro, is set to open in 2019.

Spurs sign Levy UK for new ground

Tottenham Hotspur announced official catering partner Levy Restaurants UK will bring its cuisine to the club’s new stadium, according to a BDaily report. The 61,000-seat venue will get gourmet food overseen by the Roux family, including TV chef Michel Roux Jr.

Team extends GPS partnership

FC Bayern Munich extended its partnership with U.S. soccer academy Global Premier Soccer. The partnership, which began in 2014, aims to grow the level of the game in North America, bringing the FC Bayern coaching philosophy and curriculum to more than 85,000 children and 6,000 coaches in 101 soccer clubs.

Massacre denier says books stay

A Japanese hotelier who denies that a 1937 massacre by Japanese troops in Nanjing, China, ever took place has no intention of removing books with his revisionist views from his hotels during the 2020 Summer Olympics, according to a Reuters report. Tokyo-based APA Group came under fire this year over essays in which CEO Toshio Motoya says the Nanjing Massacre never happened.

TURIN, ITALY
Allianz naming Juventus stadium

The home of Serie A side Juventus will be called Allianz Stadium until 2023, according to an AP report. Financial details of the six-season deal were not revealed. Allianz already holds naming rights for stadiums or arenas in Munich, Sydney, London, São Paulo, Vienna and Nice.
