As others leave ESPN, Schaap signs on to stay

Amid an exodus of high-level talent like Bill Simmons, Keith Olbermann and Colin Cowherd, ESPN has re-signed senior news correspondent Jeremy Schaap to a long-term extension.

Jeremy Schaap has been with ESPN full time since 1994.

As part of the deal, negotiated by IMG’s Sandy Montag, Schaap will continue to host “E:60 Reports with Jeremy Schaap” and ESPN Radio’s “The Sporting Life.” He also will remain an on-air contributor for ESPN shows “Outside the Lines,” “NFL Countdown” and “College GameDay.”

I contacted Schaap last week in Los Angeles, where he is covering the Special Olympics for ESPN, and asked him if he felt pressure to follow people like Simmons, Olbermann and Cowherd away from ESPN. After all, he’s been with the network full time since 1994.

“I feel like I’ve got the best job in the world,” Schaap said. “I’ve been afforded the opportunity to do the kind of work that I’ve always wanted to do — long-form stories, interesting travel, meaningful and interesting assignments.”

Schaap praised ESPN’s commitment to journalism, something he finds unique among sports TV companies.

“Many of my colleagues have found that the grass isn’t always greener somewhere else,” he said.
