Tim Erensen, Eiger Marketing Group

PROFESSIONAL

What I Like …

Erensen, formerly of Octagon and Peter Jacobsen Sports, is preparing for next week’s ShopRite LPGA Classic, where he is executive director.

An insight: Make big bets and don’t look back. Worrying only slows you down.

An influential person in my career: My dad. In addition to many things, he always showed us that being a great family man does not have to take a back seat to being a great businessman.

An out-of-the-box idea: Stand up for what you believe. Jockey ads on pants started off as a quasi protest and turned into a viable revenue stream for a group of athletes who are underpaid and underappreciated for their talent.

A business deal: Fox’s deal with the USGA. A game changer for sure.

A sports facility: Augusta National.

TIM ERENSEN
Partner, Eiger Marketing Group

What I Do: Oversee the day-to-day operation of Eiger Marketing Group, a boutique sports and entertainment marketing agency that consults for brands and manages events and hospitality, including the ShopRite LPGA Classic presented by Acer.

Where I’m from: Greenwich, Conn.

Where I Went to School: Eastern Kentucky University.

My First Job: Caddie at Burning Tree Country Club in Greenwich.

A sports event: The annual Erensen family Thanksgiving hockey game. More than 30 uncles and nieces versus aunts and nephews: What could be better?

A strategy: Gambling on home team underdogs.

A brand: Titleist. While everyone else tries to appease the masses, they remain committed to a mission to provide the best for the best.

A story that bears watching: Expansion of sports betting in the U.S.

A fantasy job: Owner of the New

York Rangers, so I could stop paying ridiculous prices for season tickets.

My job: The team of talented people I work with every day and waking up daily to new opportunities. I love that my office can change every day from a golf course in New Jersey to a horse track in Kentucky to a stadium in Brazil.

Sports technology: There is no limit to what is being conceived, or the fans’ appetite for the newest ones.

Sports fans: The resilience of their fandom despite increasing prices that drive the average ones away.

What I Would Like To …

Change: Our president.

Change in what I do: Despite feeling like I have a good balance, I’d always like to have more time for family.

See: The Rangers win another Cup.

See more of in sports: Athletes stay with one team for an entire career.

See more of in sports business: Organizations paying more attention to the average fan. We will lose that next generation of fans if we don’t find a way to build their affinity for what we do.

See less of in sports: Participation trophies.

See less of in sports business: Suits in the lower bowl. Rising ticket prices are keeping families and the passionate fan at home.

See different: Play-in games: Get rid of them. Sixty-four teams isn’t enough? Why play a regular season?

Eliminate: The offsetting call for diving in the NHL. Shouldn’t it really be one or the other?

What I Don’t Like …

In general: Drama. It’s totally unproductive.

Pet peeve: Negative people. They’re too busy complaining to ever accomplish anything.

A trend: Golf needs to figure out how to fix pace of play because it’s affecting the participation in the sport.

PERSONAL

What I Like …

That would surprise those who know me: That skydiving did not cure my fear of heights.

Above all else: Family.

Heroes: My parents.

Player: Stéphane Matteau.

Team: New York Rangers. (Depressing, I know).

Possession: Growing collection of thoroughbred racing trophies, including graded stakes races, as part-owner of Silver Oaks Stables.

Memento: Picture of me walking across the Hogan Bridge with my dad.

Time of year: Spring. Hockey playoffs, Masters, Derby, opening day at Winged Foot: What could be better?

Magazine: The Blood-Horse.

Websites: Equibase, WSJ, TwinSpires.com.

Chore: Taking the trash to the town dump with my son Bode.

Hobbies: Calling golf and horse racing a hobby would be an insult.

Trips: Anywhere Seabourn will take my wife and me.

Movies: “Miracle” or “Secretariat.” (Everyone loves an underdog).

TV: Watching “Shark Tank” with my daughter Jackie.

Food: Frango (a Portuguese chicken dish) at Douro on Greenwich Avenue.

Dessert: Key lime pie.

Drink: Dark and Stormy.
