Cal-Stanford game not headed to Levi’s

Cal Athletic Director Sandy Barbour announced the 2014 matchup against Stanford will remain at Memorial Stadium and not be moved to Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, according to a San Jose Mercury News report. A proposal to have the game moved for a year to Santa Clara was met with angry response from fans of both schools.

BOSTON

Marathon field will grow to 36,000
The field size for the 2014 Boston Marathon will increase to 36,000 runners, according to a Boston Globe report. The new field size marks an increase of 9,000 runners from 2013, but it will not surpass the record of 38,708 entrants set at the 100th Boston Marathon in 1996. Race registration begins today.

Stadium adds honor displays

University of Maryland’s Byrd Stadium received a small makeover this offseason, adding panels honoring unanimous All-Americans attached to the garage overlooking the west end zone, according to a Washington Post report. Football coach Randy Edsall said that more plans are in the works to honor past players and the history of the stadium.

Wings banking with Flagstar

The Detroit Red Wings signed Flagstar Bank as an official partner of the team in a three-year contract. The agreement covers a range of branding, media and hospitality opportunities, as well as incentives for fans. Flagstar will be the official Red Wings credit and debit card provider, checking and savings account provider, and mortgage partner.

Sanderson stays with PGA Tour event

Sanderson Farms reached a three-year renewal of its deal to title sponsor a PGA Tour event, the Sanderson Farms Championship. The event, held at Annandale Golf Club, is moving from July to late October. The tourney will not be contested this year. The purse is reportedly increasing by $1 million to $4 million for the 2014 event.

Wild to wear new road jerseys

The Minnesota Wild unveiled a new white road jersey for the coming season at a public event at the Minnesota State Fair’s Fan Central building. The Wild used season-ticket holder feedback throughout the 18-month design and prototype process. The jersey keeps the primary Wild logo at the center of the sweater and features Iron Range Red numbers and collar. Minnesota will wear the jerseys in its first preseason road game against the Winnipeg Jets on Sept. 19.

NYC FC eyes parcel near Yankees

MLS expansion club NYC FC, whose plan to build a stadium in Queens was interrupted by community opposition, has a new site in mind: just south of Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, according to a New York Times report. NYC FC, a partnership of EPL club Manchester City and the Yankees, is negotiating with the owners of a nine-acre parcel between the Major Deegan Expressway
and East 153rd Street, according to the report.

ORLANDO
Magic plans memorabilia garage sale

In celebration of the Orlando Magic’s 25th anniversary season, the team will hold a garage sale of Magic memorabilia. All proceeds will benefit the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation. Magic community ambassadors Nick Anderson and Bo Outlaw will attend the sale, which is open to the public and set for Saturday at the RDV Sportsplex.

CenturyLink signs with Magic
CenturyLink will be the exclusive video provider of the Orlando Magic in a new multiyear partnership. CenturyLink Prism TV service will be highlighted through touch points with fans in-arena and in-market, including special service offers for Magic fans.

Eagles practices draw big crowds

More than 110,000 people turned out for the five open practices the Philadelphia Eagles held at Lincoln Financial Field this summer. Training camp was held at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa., the previous 17 seasons.

Giants pay back wages, damages

U.S. Department of Labor officials said the San Francisco Giants have paid nearly $545,000 in back wages and damages to 74 clubhouse and administrative employees for violations of minimum wage, overtime and record-keeping laws, according to an Associated Press report. Staci Slaughter, Giants senior vice president of communications, said that the team changed its clubhouse compensation system before the Labor Department’s inquiry.

OSU opens indoor training center

Oklahoma State University completed its Sherman Smith Training Center over the summer, the final Big 12 school to have an indoor practice facility, according to an Oklahoman report. The structure, across the street from Boone Pickens Stadium, is not air-conditioned or heated but instead features fabric doors that roll up and fans to circulate the air.

DÜSSELDORF, GERMANY
Band plays for hockey operations

A charity concert by German punk rock band Die Toten Hosen generated more than $500,000 that the band will donate to German Hockey League club Düsseldorf EG, according to an SID report. The band played for more than two hours in front of 12,000 fans at the ISS Dome, which is the team’s home arena.

JAKARTA, INDONESIA
Rugby gets official recognition

Rugby players and supporters in Jakarta were in a celebratory mood as the Indonesia National Sports Committee officially recognized rugby as a national sport during a ceremony in Jakarta late last month, according to a Jakarta Globe report. The Indonesia Rugby Union was founded in May 2004.

NFL gets official home on Channel 4
Channel 4 is to become the new U.K. terrestrial TV home of the NFL and the Super Bowl as part of a two-year agreement with the NFL, according to a (London) Daily Mail report. In a deal that sees the station become the NFL’s exclusive free-to-air TV partner in the U.K., Channel 4 will also feature live coverage of the NFL’s annual games at Wembley Stadium and a weekly highlights show.

Saudi prince invests in Blades

Sheffield United F.C. received a financial boost last week when Saudi Arabian Prince Abdullah bin Mosaad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud bought a 50 percent stake in the League One club, according to a Reuters report. Prince Abdullah will become co-chairman of the team, nicknamed the Blades, with current owner Kevin McCabe.
