Davis is O’s fan choice bobble

Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis won the team’s AT&T Fans’ Choice Bobblehead promotion. The resulting Davis bobblehead giveaway is set for Sept. 29 to the first 20,000 fans ages 15 and older. Davis beat out outfielder Nate McLouth and pitchers Wei-Yin Chen, Jason Hammel and Jim Johnson in the contest.

BUFFALO
Bills renew ‘Junior GM’ contest

The Buffalo Bills renewed a partnership with New York’s 529 College Savings Program with the “Become the Buffalo Bills Junior GM for a Day” contest. The winner, among New York residents ages 8 to 12, will have the opportunity to spend the day with Bills general manager Doug Whaley. Twelve contestants will join Bills employees for live interview sessions to determine the winner.

COLUMBUS
Jackets foundation donations total $525K

The Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation announced the donation of $525,000 to local charitable and youth hockey organizations for the 2012-13 grant cycle, the largest single-year total in the foundation’s 13-year history. Since its inception in 2000, the foundation has invested more than $4.7 million in central Ohio.

Funk stars at Mutual of Omaha HQs

A statue of 2009 U.S. Senior Open champion Fred Funk was installed at Mutual of Omaha’s headquarters. The 12-foot-tall likeness of the Mutual of Omaha-sponsored golfer was designed and built by VEE Corp. of Minneapolis. This year’s U.S. Senior Open will be played July 11-14 at Omaha Country Club.

Nationwide projected over budget
Nationwide Arena is projected to be over budget in its second fiscal year under public ownership, but a carryover from this year’s surplus is expected to cover the deficit, according to a Colmbus Dispatch report. Columbus Arena Management board members expect the arena to bring in about $18.6 million in revenue in the next fiscal year while expenses will total $18.8 million.

TS Sports to install new SMU board

Southern Methodist University is partnering with TS Sports to install a new video display system for Moody Coliseum. The video boards are part of an expansion project for the venue that also calls for premium seating and renovation of the entry lobby and concourses.

Group to build region’s first curling site

The Triangle Curling Club has purchased a 14,500-square-foot facility for $215,000 with plans to build the Southeast’s first major curling facility. The venue will house a four-sheet ice surface dedicated solely to curling and is expected to open by February.

MIAMI
Heat have Force in S.D.

The Miami Heat agreed to a single affiliation partnership with the NBA Development League’s Sioux Falls Skyforce, beginning with the 2013-14 season. The Heat’s “hybrid” affiliation with the club means it will pay for and control the Skyforce’s basketball operations, while existing local ownership maintains primary responsibility for the team’s off-the-court business operations and community initiatives.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.
Homegrown hops in Pelicans beer

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans’ Hops Heaven partnership with New South Brewing Co. has created a signature beer made from hops grown at TicketReturn.Com Field. Named Pelicans Summer Tide through fan suggestions on the team’s Facebook page, the beer was tapped last week and will be sold at Pelicans games. For every keg that is sold, the team will donate $10 to a local hospice.

OTTAWA
CFL club unveiled as RedBlacks

The Ottawa Sports & Entertainment Group revealed that the name of the city’s CFL expansion franchise will be the Ottawa RedBlacks. The team is scheduled to begin play in 2014. The colors and large “R” in the RedBlacks logo are reminiscent of the defunct Rough Riders franchise, while the circular saw blade in the mark ties into Ottawa’s lumber history, according to a Canadian Press report.

PHILADELPHIA
Eagles plan $125M renovation

The Philadelphia Eagles plan to spend $125 million on a two-year renovation of Lincoln Financial Field. The project will include adding 1,600 seats in three corners of the 10-year-old stadium, installing two new HD video boards and providing free Wi-Fi service to fans.

Phillies bobbles hit 1 million mark
The Philadelphia Phillies gave away their one-millionth bobblehead doll this month when Carlos Ruiz figurines were given out to fans attending a game against Miami. A gold-painted, autographed bobblehead was presented to one fan to mark the milestone. The team has given away 27 different bobbleheads since 2001.

Pirates clinic to benefit cancer research

The Pittsburgh Pirates are hosting their third annual Pitch for Hope Women’s Baseball Clinic on June 30. Women ages 14 and older can take part in a day of baseball-specific events at PNC Park in support of A Glimmer of Hope, a Pittsburgh-based breast cancer research organization.

Levi’s Stadium price up to $1.3B

The cost to build Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara is rising about $100 million, to $1.3 billion. The San Francisco 49ers said this latest increase to the price, which has jumped $336 million in three years, was because of new elements to enhance the fan experience, according to a San Jose Mercury News report.

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y.
The Glen, Flash team for charity

Watkins Glen International and the Western New York Flash of the NWSL joined forces to benefit a cancer support group. For their game Sunday, the Flash will wear jerseys featuring the Watkins Glen logo. The game is a week before the track’s Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen event. The jerseys will be auctioned off to raise money for Camp Good Days.

BANGKOK
City bans racing from historic district

Bangkok’s chances of hosting a Formula One race have faded after planners banned car racing from the city’s historic quarter, according to an AFP report. The city was touted to host a landmark F1 night race in 2015.

FIFA offers course for Syrian refugees

FIFA is organizing a grassroots course at Yarmouk University in Irbid, Jordan’s second-largest city, aimed at thousands of Syrian refugees. The five-day program will enable 28 instructors to teach within the scope of football festivals and workshops for Syrian children.

Al Jazeera shutters London operations

Al Jazeera made the surprise decision to close its operation in London, which is the point of origin for its broadcast of English-language football content, including the Champions League and FA Cup, according to a (London) Daily Mail report. All London sports programming now will come from Al Jazeera’s global headquarters in Doha, Qatar.

Roof damage shuts down stadium
A committee of engineers said the city’s Joao Havelange stadium, scheduled to host the athletics events at the 2016 Summer Olympics, is to stay shut for 18 months while the roof is repaired, according to Reuters report. The stadium, completed six years ago, was closed in March because of structural damage to the roof. The city government said that roof could present a risk for spectators if the wind were to reach more than 39 miles per hour.
