Approved bond financing includes dome
The Georgia Department of Economic Development board approved $30 million in bond financing for three projects on the Georgia World Congress Center campus, according to an Atlanta Journal Constitution report. It includes funds to be used toward a new facility for the Atlanta Falcons.
Indians promote ‘Catch 25’ campaign
Deadline set for Astrodome ideas
Harris County Judge Ed Emmett said that the county set a deadline of June 10 for private entities to offer financially sound ideas for the use of the Astrodome, according to a Houston Chronicle report. Public entities after that will have until June 25.

Bally Technologies' new NASCAR slot machine made its Las Vegas debut at several Boyd Gaming properties, according to a Las Vegas Sun report. The machine lets players choose among five drivers: Clint Bowyer, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon, Kevin Harvick and Jimmie Johnson. Boyd sponsors Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s Nationwide Series race.
New Leinie’s is ‘Bernie’s’
“Bernie’s Barrelman Ale,” inspired by the Milwaukee Brewers’ mascot, was selected as the name for a new beer that celebrates a partnership between the team and Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Co. It will be available exclusively at Miller Park. More than 10,000 votes were received, and 55 percent voted for the winning name. The other candidates were “Brew Crew Brew” and “Brewers All-Star Ale.”
Wild season-ticket prices up slightly
The Minnesota Wild set its season-ticket prices for next season, and there is an average increase of 4.5 percent a ticket, according to a Minneapolis Star Tribune report. Season-ticket per-game prices range from $23 to $92.
Nike will be the New York Cosmos’ official kit supplier for the 2013 NASL fall season. When the Cosmos return to the field at Hofstra University’s Shuart Stadium on Aug. 3 for the first time in nearly 30 years, they will sport the same colors and logo worn by soccer legends Pelé, Franz Beckenbauer, Giorgio Chinaglia and Carlos Alberto during the 1970s and ’80s.
UCF arena gets CFE name
The University of Central Florida’s 10,000-seat basketball venue will be known as the CFE Federal Credit Union Arena, or the CFE Arena for short, according to an Orlando Sentinel report. The credit union is paying nearly $4 million over seven years and plans to open a branch inside the arena, according to the report.
Lacrosse finals to generate $25 million
The NCAA men’s and women’s lacrosse championships held in late May were expected to generate $25 million for the Philadelphia region’s economy. The events at Lincoln Financial Field and Villanova University attracted thousands of fans and generated about 10,000 hotel room nights.
Penguins larger than life on new screen
The Pittsburgh Penguins erected a new 27-by-15-foot Trib Total Media Big Screen outside Consol Energy Center that is wider and taller than the previous one, according to a Pittsburgh Tribune-Review report. Crowds routinely gather outside the venue for free viewing of games.
The Carolina Hurricanes have been posting teaser swatches on Instagram of their new home and road uniforms, which are slated for a full unveiling at a launch event at PNC Arena on Tuesday. This will be the first significant uniform alteration in the team’s 15-year history in North Carolina.
Kings quickly hire new sales staff
The Sacramento Kings received about 200 résumés, conducted more than 120 interviews, and quickly hired 40 new sales associates as demand has spiked for season tickets now that it has been resolved that the team is staying in Sacramento and a new arena is in the works.
Cards fans taking over Twitter account
The St. Louis Cardinals’ Social Media Night in the Budweiser Bowtie Bar at Busch Stadium on Tuesday will focus on fan engagement, including giving fans the opportunity to take over the team’s Twitter account (@Cardinals) for the game. Fans who buy a special ticket to the event will receive access to a pregame Q&A program featuring players who are active on social media.

Man-made island planned for 2022
Qatar plans to build a $5.5 billion island off the coast of Doha with floating hotels to house fans for the 2022 World Cup, according to a Reuters report. Qatari developer Barwa Real Estate, part-owned by Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund, is behind the Oryx Island endeavor. The hotels would be cruise ships reportedly able to house as many as 25,000 fans.

NASCAR’s France to wave French flag
Grand-Am Road Racing founder and NASCAR vice chairman Jim France will wave the French flag to start the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 22. Both France and ALMS founder Don Panoz are on the board of a new International Motor Sports Association, which will sanction United SportsCar Racing, resulting from the merger of Grand-Am and the ALMS. Bill France Jr., Jim France’s brother, was accorded the same honor at Le Mans in 1976.
Jumeirah sponsoring Statoil Masters
Hotel group Jumeirah will be the official hotel provider for the Statoil Masters Tennis at the Royal Albert Hall in early December. The event is owned by IMG. The five-star Jumeirah Carlton Tower and Jumeirah Grosvenor House Apartments will provide accommodations for tennis players at the Statoil Masters Tennis through 2015.
Bayern Munich tops Man U value
Bayern Munich overtook Manchester United to become the world’s most valuable club brand, according to the results of the latest BrandFinance Football 50 study. The annual study ranks clubs by their brand value. Bayern’s brand value reached $860 million, up 9 percent from 2012.
Team switches to AudienceView
League Two Portsmouth fans will soon be able to buy tickets via Facebook thanks to a new ticketing system. The club replaced Ticketmaster with AudienceView, which will allow fans to buy tickets online and allow the club to better target its marketing.
