I recently bit the bullet and bought a new Samsung 3-D TV, but now I need content. This Christmas I’m hoping for some 3-D movies and additional glasses, as two pair just doesn’t cut it for a family of five.
We’re purchasing the kids the usual assortment of books, games and toys, but I’m most excited that we have them earning money so as a family we can make a donation to an organization of their choice that will help families and kids in need.

What I hope to receive: I’m still debating whether or not I want to put a 50-inch 3-D LED flat-screen on my Santa list — can’t decide how cool it is to sit on the couch and watch TV with 3-D glasses on. On the book side, I really want to receive “Steve Jobs,” by Walter Isaacson. Hopefully it will inspire me to stay hungry and act foolishly in 2012.
What I’ll be giving: My four daughters all will receive new STX Lacrosse sticks and cold gear from Under Armour under the tree. We are a lax family, and our girls all love the sport’s latest technology.

I definitely have to buy some sort of iPhone for my wife, because she is dying for one and has never had a smartphone. Relatives out of town might receive an iPad to use the FaceTime feature so my kids can talk face-to-face with their grandparents, aunts and uncles.
I wouldn’t mind receiving the DVD set for “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” — a hilarious cast. Any older book from Robert Ludlum would be good. I also wouldn’t mind a new car, but that’s not happening!

DVDs: “Disneynature: Earth” series and “The Vampire Diaries” collection.
Gadget: Nikon D7000 with 1000mm lens.
Books: “Steve Jobs,” by Walter Isaacson, and “Onward: How Starbucks Fought for Its Life Without Losing Its Soul,” by Howard Schultz and Joanne Gordon.

I am hoping to receive a DigiQ temperature control for my Big Green Egg as I am obsessed with cooking on it, and “The League,” seasons 1 and 2, since I missed it on TV. Additionally, two books I hope to receive are “Boomerang,” by Michael Lewis (a good lesson for us all), and “Thinking, Fast and Slow,” by Daniel Kahneman, a book about decision-making and the delicate balance between intuition and logic.
In return, I plan to give various LeapFrog products and several things beginning with “i”.

This holiday season I’m hoping to replace my technologically outdated ski equipment with the latest goods that the snow gods can deliver. The current front-runner are the new K2 Superstitious skis (because I’m not superstitious). I am, however, getting slower as I get older, so any advantage that helps convince my brain that I’m still an “advanced” intermediate skier will serve the old ego well.

Hope to receive the eighth season of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” DVD and a trip to see Springsteen’s tour in 2012. Giving certificates for Best Buy, Amazon and iTunes for Christmas, as well as mini-WNBA championship trophies this summer.

Golf Digest
The Kindle Fire. It’s the size of the original Golf Digest back in 1950, and our magazine now looks great on this device. I can’t wait to give one to my wife and daughters so they can enjoy their favorite titles on it. Cheap enough almost to be a stocking stuffer.

CD: What is a CD?
DVD: Gazelle Glider instructional video with introduction by Tony Little — what a stud! (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCX_p9Y59n8. Don’t worry, I am not getting a 20 percent commission on each sale.)
Gadget: 1. Latest Sony Xperia mobile phone — simply the best. 2. Segway (sport model) to drive from office to conference room when it’s time to intimidate the opposition, or impress da ladies, as the case may be.

Thanks to the relentless pushing of Mike Nishi, the Chicago Marathon’s general manager, I have finally started to catch up with technology via my new iPhone 4S. He might have created a monster, though, because I am now craving an iPad.
Old school still works for me, though. I also want to get Laura Hillenbrand’s book “Unbroken,” about Louie Zamperini. It’s been out a year already but I haven’t had a chance to read it and as a history buff, it’s a must read for me since it’s about a WWII hero who also was a runner.
As for gifts for others, my toughest assignment is figuring out something appropriate for my new assistant, Siri.
