Professionalism counts

How you see it

This morning I read your [Sutton Impact] article in SportsBusiness Journal [Feb. 14-20 issue]. As I was reading, I couldn’t help but say, “Yes, yes, yes, I agree!”

I am in my final two semesters in the business school at Wayne State University in Detroit and working for a professional sports team in the marketing department as an intern with a focus on social media. One of the tasks I was given was to help organize and hire a promotions team for the use of in-game entertainment. Résumés came in by the masses, and I found myself perplexed by the way employee hopefuls presented themselves and the lack of knowledge about our company.

As a former Miss Michigan from the Miss America Organization, I was extremely pleased to hear that someone other than my crazy interview coach counts the “likes” and “ums” in an interview. My coach would snap a rubber band every time I would say it. Thank goodness those days are over. I am not perfect — nobody ever is — but the level of professionalism I have walking into an interview sets me far apart from most college students graduating today with my same degree. It’s amazing how simple that concept is yet how many students don’t take the time to correct it.

I would love to see something about how once you get your foot in the door and you are hired, then what? Suits and ties are still expected of you, the “likes” cannot sneak back in, and continuing to learn more about the company for which you work is a must! How do you keep from being a percentage in the company’s turnover rate?
