NFL brings in media executives Cohen, Eaton

The NFL hired two longtime media executives to unify its newsgathering operations.

The league hired Jim Cohen to be senior coordinating producer on NFL Network, and David Eaton as news editor for NFL Media Group — two new positions. Both executives will be based in Los Angeles.

“These are big hires for us,” said Eric Weinberger, NFL Network’s executive producer. “We’ve been trying to build a global newsroom, and these two have so much experience in newsrooms that they are a perfect fit.”

The idea of building a global newsroom should make it easier for the NFL’s different platforms to share content. So video from NFL.com’s “team cam” will be directed to the league’s linear TV channel or mobile network, if needed. Cohen and Eaton will oversee distribution of NFL content across linear television, online, broadband and mobile.

“This is about growing and evolving and not standing still,” Weinberger said.

Cohen, who will report to Weinberger, had been an executive sports editor for the Philadelphia Inquirer. Before that, he was vice president of programming and production for ESPN during a time when the company launched “Pardon The Interruption” and “Around the Horn.”

He will oversee day-to-day production among all of NFL Network’s studio shows and will lead the channel’s studio production teams and talent.

Eaton, who will report to both Weinberger and Jeff Berman, general manager of NFL Digital Media, had been a bureau chief for ABC News. He will be tasked with overseeing what the league is calling the NFL Media Super Newsroom.
