Football Notes: LFP Suspends Use Of Goal-Line Technology

The French Professional Football League (LFP) decided to "immediately suspend" the use of goal-line technology after a "series of glitches with the system," LFP CEO Didier Quillot said on Thursday. The decision "comes in the wake of two errors" during Wednesday's League Cup quarterfinals (AFP, 1/11).

A social media message containing "racist references" posted by Russian Premier League side Spartak Moscow "shows a shocking level of ignorance," anti-discrimination group Fare Exec Dir Piara Powar said. Spartak tweeted a video of some black players training in sunny conditions with a message translating as "see how the chocolates melt in the sun" (BBC, 1/13).

Turkish police "used teargas as things got messy with excited" Süper Lig side Istanbul Basaksehir fans while they waited for new signing Arda Turan to arrive. The midfielder is set complete his move from Barcelona. Fans clashed with police and security forces "reacted by using teargas" to calm the melee (THE SUN, 1/14).

Argentina will end its "complicated system of relegating teams with the lowest points average gained over three years," Argentine FA President Claudio Tapia said on Saturday. Tapia said that the system, known as the "promedios" and common in Latin America, will be phased out by '21. However, he did not say "whether a conventional system would replace it" (REUTERS, 1/13).
