Architect Design Engine Wins Bid To Build HQ For Gordon Murray Design

Architecture firm Design Engine "has seen off Foster + Partners to win the race to build" a new HQ for Formula 1 car designer Gordon Murray, according to Richard Waite of the ARCHITECTS' JOURNAL. The Winchester-based practice, which recently returned to London, landed the 8,500-square-meter development following an "invited competition with an undisclosed number of participants." The three-stage scheme in Shalford, Surrey, for automotive engineer Gordon Murray Design features six new buildings on a site close to the company's existing HQ. A new design and engineering block will be built in the first phase, followed by main offices and a restaurant in phase two and "the remainder in phase three." GMD is led by Gordon Murray, who has designed F1 world championship-winning cars for Brabham and McLaren as well as the McLaren F1 road car during a 50-year career (ARCHITECTS' JOURNAL, 1/4).
