HOPE SOLO, the "controversial" former U.S. goalkeeper, is running for president of the U.S. Soccer Federation. The 36-year-old announced her "surprise candidacy" on Thursday on Facebook. Solo, who "brings a crowded field to nine candidates," is the second woman to announce a bid for the job, joining Soccer United Marketing President KATHY CARTER (London GUARDIAN, 12/8). ... LINDSEY VONN withdrew from the World Cup in St. Moritz, Switzerland, "with a back injury" -- two months before the 2018 Winter Olympics. The American "compressed her back" on the fifth gate during Saturday's Super-G race (BBC, 12/10). ... Former cyclist BRADLEY WIGGINS finished 21st in his competitive rowing debut at the British Indoor Championships in London. Wiggins, who retired from cycling in Dec. '16, was competing in the elite men's 2,000m race (BBC, 12/9). ... Former Ryder Cup golfer TOMMY HORTON died, aged 76. Horton, who lived in Jersey, played for Great Britain and Ireland in the '75 and '77 Ryder Cups -- both of which were won by the U.S. He also won four European Tour events and 23 events on the European Seniors Tour (BBC, 12/8).
