League Notes: CCI Fines BCCI $7.8M For Anti-Competitive Practices

The Competition Commission of India on Wednesday imposed a fine of Rs 52.24 crore ($7.85M) on the BCCI "for anti-competitive practices with respect to the Indian Premier League." The watchdog penalized the cricket body for the same amount in Feb. '13 as well, but that penalty was "set aside by the appellate tribunal after an appeal by the BCCI" (PTI, 11/29).

ONE Championship Chair & CEO Chatri Sityodtong spoke privately with Indian PM Narenda Modi regarding "how India could emerge as a potentially huge new market for ONE Championship as it expands aggressively across Asia and the rest of the world." Sityodtong spoke with Modi about "traditional Asian culture, the power of martial arts and its history in India and the possibility of hosting a live event in the South Asian country" (JAKARTA GLOBE, 11/29).

The No. 10 jersey "that Sachin Tendulkar made his own may not be seen on an Indian player in the near future," with the BCCI claiming that cricketers are "unwilling to wear it out of respect for the icon despite the absence of any plan to formally retire it." There is "no precedence of a jersey number being retired" in honor of a player in int'l cricket (PTI, 11/29).

This week, the ACT became the first jurisdiction to ban greyhound racing, "pushing ahead despite the NSW government's backflip last October." It cited a "disturbing case" in NSW in which a trainer killed a sick puppy by "hitting it twice in the head with a hammer." Earlier this month, Victorian regulators ruled on what they described as an "egregious" case of animal cruelty and neglect (London GUARDIAN, 11/29).
