Premier League Announces Christmas Eve Matches Will Kick Off Before 4pm

The Football Supporters' Federation said that the Premier League agreed any Christmas Eve games will kick off before 16:00 GMT, according to the BBC. The group said that EPL Exec Chair Richard Scudamore told it that "fixtures will not take place at that time." Reports suggested fixtures including Arsenal vs. Liverpool "could be moved" from Dec. 23 to Christmas Eve for TV. MP Tom Watson wrote to Scudamore "urging him to reconsider the proposals." The FSF said that Sucadmore told it December's TV picks would be announced on Oct. 19, but "possible Christmas Eve games and beyond would take another week to confirm." According to the FSF, Scudamore also said that no games will kick off on Sunday mornings or evenings, "while more midweek and bank holiday games will be broadcast on TV" (BBC, 10/10). In London, Paul MacInnes reported last week, the FSF described the prospect of fixtures being moved from Dec. 23 to Christmas Eve to be broadcast by Sky Sports as "a new low point in putting the interests of football broadcasters over those of match-going fans." FSF CEO Kevin Miles said that he "welcomed dialogue with the Premier League," with biannual meetings now taking place between the organization and the supporters' group. Miles: "The Premier League have made genuine efforts to meet our requirements" (GUARDIAN, 10/10).
