Former National Basketball League side Perth Wildcats Managing Dir Nick Marvin has "thrown his support behind a new report" that calls for an end to alcohol sponsorship of sport and for alcohol advertising during sport to be regulated, according to Chris Leitch of PERTH NOW. The McCusker Centre for Action on Alcohol & Youth is also "pushing for greater scrutiny" of alcohol advertising and marketing during sports broadcasts. A report, commissioned by the McCusker Centre, stated that seven out of 10 adults want to see advertising promoting alcohol "phased out at times when children are likely to be watching sport." The survey of 1,050 people found that 80% of adults are "concerned about current levels of exposure children have to alcohol promotion," while 71% "do not think it is appropriate for alcohol advertisements to feature sports stars that are popular with children." The McCusker Centre is calling for the Australian federal government to:
- Phase out alcohol sponsorship of sport.
- Prevent alcohol ads during sport before 8:30pm.
- Replace industry self-regulation with an independent body to regulate all alcohol marketing (PERTH NOW, 9/27).
