Channel 9 Deal Helps Brad Fittler's Hopes Of Coaching NSW State Of Origin

Brad Fittler’s path to the NSW State of Origin coaching job "appears clearer after the Nine Network declared his new deal would allow him to take the position," according to Matt Encarnacion of the AAP. The broadcast company announced Tuesday that the former Blues player signed a contract to remain a National Rugby League commentator beyond this season. Nine Network Dir of Sport Tom Malone said, "Freddy is unique. He is 'lean forward' television talent, who brings so much entertainment to rugby league." However, "of most interest" is the network's stance on Fittler being available to coach the Blues "should he be offered to take the reins from axed coach Laurie Daley next year." A Nine Network statement said, "Nine's new contract with Freddy will enable him to take up the NSWRL (NSW Rugby League) head coach position, should that eventuate." The comments come "just a day" after NSWRL CEO David Trodden admitted Fittler was an “obvious candidate” for the role. Fittler's chances "firmed" after the NSWRL board ruled out all NRL head coaches "from being approached for the position last week" (AAP, 9/26).
