BIBIANA STEINHAUS became the first female official to referee a Bundesliga game on Sunday "as she took charge of Werder Bremen's 1-1 draw at Hertha Berlin." Steinhaus, 38, "controlled the game well." She awarded 21 fouls, but "issued just one yellow card," booking PER CILJAN SKJELBRED for "an ugly challenge" on FLORIAN KAINZ (London DAILY MAIL, 9/10). ... Cricket Australia CEO JAMES SUTHERLAND will go head-to-head with junior cricketers during his Victoria stopover for "National Play Cricket Week" but the activity has one catch: he will need to use giant cricket equipment. The oversized equipment is to demonstrate the challenges previously faced by kids in the sport, including having to play with equipment that is too heavy for them, or too large (CA). ... PAPA MASSATA DIACK described accusations that he was "part of a large corruption racket" involved in determining the location of the Olympic Games as the "biggest lie in the history of world sport." France’s financial prosecutor said this week that investigations had revealed a corruption scheme centered on Diack, the son of former IAAF President LAMINE DIACK (REUTERS, 9/8).
