League Notes: Sri Lanka To Deploy Extra Security For ODI Against India

Sri Lanka will deploy extra security for its fourth one-day int'l against India on Thursday to "avoid further crowd trouble." India clinched the ODI series in Pallekele on Sunday "but the win was marred by an incident involving the spectators." An additional 1,000 police will be deployed at the stadium in Colombo (BBC, 8/30).

In China and South Korea, "stadiums are being built" for competitive video gaming. Yet Japan, which held some of the world’s first televised video-game battles in the '80s, "no longer has serious training grounds for its players." Laws meant to police organized crime and gambling "have cast a net so wide they prevent paid gaming competitions, whether at internet cafes or at stadiums." Video game company Square Enix spokesperson Yohei Mikado said that the first step "is to get today’s Japanese players to see video games as an event worth watching." To do that, the software developer last year opened a 76-seat "theater cafe" for gaming demonstrations (BLOOMBERG, 8/29).
