England Manager Southgate Enlists Help Of All Blacks Adviser

England national football team Manager Gareth Southgate "has been using a senior adviser to the All Blacks to help develop a team culture" around his squad, according to Martyn Ziegler of the LONDON TIMES. Owen Eastwood has been a "key figure in developing the New Zealand rugby union set-up" as it has "become the pre-eminent team in world sport," and he has been working with Southgate's squad and the England women's team. Southgate is an "admirer of the All Blacks' set-up" and has spoken of the need for "self-regulation" and for the squad to adopt a code the Kiwi players use, which "aims to tackle inflated egos and ensure the team comes first." Eastwood, a lawyer by trade, has also advised Chelsea, Man City, the South Africa national cricket team, former England rugby coach Stuart Lancaster and the military command group at NATO. Southgate and the FA have also "picked the brains" of the German FA (DFB) "as part of an agreement struck in March to share ideas on coaching, youth development and administration" (LONDON TIMES, 8/29). In London, Ben Rumsby reported England's Euro 2016 "exit at the hands of Iceland was the latest in a long line of flops at major tournaments." Since Southgate took charge, every player called into the squad has been "asked to watch a seven-minute film about what it takes to win," which begins with footage of his own penalty-shootout miss in England's Euro 1996 defeat against Germany (TELEGRAPH, 8/28).
