Event Notes: FIBA Unhappy With Super 8: Macau Basketball Invitational

Plans to stage an int'l exhibition basketball tournament in Macau next month featuring eight of the top club teams in Asia have "fallen foul" of the sport’s world governing body. The Super 8: Macau Basketball Invitational is scheduled for Sept. 20-24 at the 4,000-plus capacity Studio City, but organizers said that FIBA is "refusing to give it official recognition in an attempt to put pressure on the teams to withdraw." FIBA has yet to respond to requests for comment (SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST, 8/11).

The Indonesian Ministry of Tourism is planning to organize 10 surfing competitions to support the country's maritime tourism destinations. Indonesia has been "famous among surfers, with several places in the country recognized internationally for the best waves in the world" (JAKARTA GLOBE, 8/11).

The Asian Cricket Council on Saturday accepted Pakistan's concerns and agreed to shift the U19 Asia Cup from India to Malaysia, according to sources in the Pakistan Cricket Board. The PCB "raised security concerns for the Pakistani team's safety if the cup was held in India, which were accepted by the ACC in a meeting in Colombo" (DAWN, 8/12).
