Kenyan Premier League Posts Loss Despite 270M Kenyan Shillings In Revenue

Grants to clubs, staff salaries and marketing fees "got the lion's share of Kenyan Premier League Limited's budget" as the body that runs Kenya's top-flight football league "wound up with a loss" of 4.1M Kenyan shillings last year, according to Cellestine Olilo of the DAILY NATION. KPL Ltd.'s financial cycle runs from January to December each year. A copy of the company's financial statements indicated that of the 270.9M Kenyan shillings in total income controlled by KPL in '16, the company spent 19.5M Kenyan shillings on marketing and advertising and 13.3M Kenyan shillings on nine staff members currently on the company's payroll. Frontiers Marketing Company, which was contracted in '15 as KPL's commercial agent to "help it source" sponsors for the top-flight league, accounted for 10.2M Kenyan shillings last year. Whether Frontiers Marketing Company has increased the market appeal of the top-flight is "up for debate" (DAILY NATION, 8/1).
