Facility Notes: Scottish Environmental Agencies Oppose Another Trump Golf Course

Environmental agencies have opposed U.S. President Donald Trump's plans for another Scottish golf course. The Trump Organization announced it wants to build a second 18-hold course at Trump Int'l Golf Links Scotland resort, on the Aberdeenshire coast. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency, which polices water quality, said that it would "breach rules on sewage pollution, environmental protection and conserving groundwater." Conservation agency Scottish Natural Heritage said that there was a "risk that parts of the course would be damaged by drifting dunes" (Scotland DAILY RECORD, 7/29).

Serie A side AS Roma President James Pallotta "warned he will sell" the club if the Lazio regional government does not approve its project for a new stadium. Earlier in the year, the club "significantly scaled down the much-delayed project," axing two office towers to win the backing of Rome Mayor Virginia Raggi. Pallotta said, "I don't want to sell the club. But if they don't approve the project, someone will have to go all the way" (ANSA, 7/28).

A pre-determination hearing into Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen's plans for a new stadium on the outskirts of the city will take place on Sept. 13 at Aberdeen Town House. The £50M ($66M) stadium and training facilities would be at Kingsford (BBC, 7/31).

A fire at Brazil's Olympic velodrome was put out on Sunday by firefighters "who battled for hours to extinguish the blaze." Officials were "still to determine the extent of the damage." The fire was caused by a "burning flying lantern that fell on the building" Saturday night (London TELEGRAPH, 7/31).

Zimbabwe removed an artificial pitch that was donated by FIFA in '08 ahead of the 2010 World Cup. As South Africa hosted the tournament, every nation on the continent received an artificial surface as part of FIFA's Win In Africa With Africa project. The surface was not maintained properly and became worn out, and is "believed to have been responsible for numerous injuries, particularly knee problems" (BBC, 7/31).
