German sports manager Michael Mronz is planning a bid to hold the Olympic Games in the Rhine-Ruhr area "following Hamburg's failed bid" to host the event, according to Laurent Schüssler of the LUXEMBURGER WORT. If the region's bid is successful, athletes will also be competing in Bonn, which is only 200km from Luxembourg. In the competition between Paris and L.A. for the 2024 Games, Paris "has the best chances of hosting the Olympics in seven years." The final decision is "especially important for Mronz." Although he is not involved in either of the discussions, his plans to host the 2032 Olympic Games in Germany "could be destroyed if Paris were to host the 2028 Olympic Games" instead of the 2024 Games, as two consecutive Olympics hosted in Europe is "very unrealistic." Mronz's plans are "already very advanced." He presented his project, "Rhine Ruhr Olympic City," in Düsseldorf, which revealed "two major differences to the traditional candidates: a region, not a city which would host" the Games; and, 80% of the required competition venues "are already there" (LUXEMBURGER WORT, 7/27).
