Football Notes: Timing, Format Of Africa Cup Of Nations Up For Discussion

The format and timing of the Africa Cup of Nations is "up for discussion as a two-day symposium on the continental game's future has begun in Morocco." The Nations Cup's timing in January and February has "long angered clubs in Europe, where many Africans play." A move to a tournament in June and July is also set to be discussed, "as is the less likely possibility of staging the final every four, rather than two, years" (BBC, 7/18).

The agent of a late Cameroonian footballer asked FIFA to "train all players and coaches in how to treat victims of sudden cardiac arrest." Hasan Anil Eken, whose client Patrick Ekeng died in such circumstances last year, "believes this could prove crucial in a battle to save a player's life." FIFA said that SCA victims have "a success rate of 90% for resuscitation" if correctly treated within two minutes (BBC, 7/18).

Yongin, South Korea, said Tuesday that "nothing has been confirmed on hosting a pro football club in its region, denying rumors that it has contacted Jeju United in the top domestic league." Yongin "will complete the construction of a multi-sport stadium with 37,155 seats in November" (YONHAP, 7/18).

Trinidad and Tobago FA President David John-Williams could be facing a $600,000-plus lawsuit for "failing to pay the Italian coaches of its women's team." John-Williams hired Carolina Morace as women's national team coach "in what was regarded as a coup for the island." However, with wages unpaid for three months, Morace said that “the contract [is] terminated for just cause” (INSIDE WORLD FOOTBALL, 7/18).
