A-League Side Sydney FC Unveils New Kit Without Major Sponsor

A-League side Sydney FC unveiled its new kit, but the "most notable part about the jersey was what was missing," according to Dominic Bossi of THE AGE. For the first time since '11, the Sky Blues "will start pre-season without a major sponsor." Sydney will not renew its longstanding deal with travel company Webjet, whose airplane logo has been featured on the front of the club's shirts since '12, "seeking a bigger deal" now that the A-League will be televised by a "major free-to-air network for the first time in its history." The club has been "unable to secure a new major partner" despite its "incredible" campaign last season in which it lost just one game, won the premiership and championship and "set a plethora of records on the way." It is understood there are "several interested parties that could come on board" before the first A-League game in October. The jersey "included a new back of shirt sponsor." On a day when Arsenal unveiled its third strip at Sydney's Fort Denison as part of a global launch, the Sky Blues presented what "could be regarded as a hand-me-down from the Gunners." Arsenal's major sponsor, Emirates airline, was previously in negotiations with Sydney FC to become its primary commercial partner (THE AGE, 7/12).
