EuroLeague Ordered To Pay FIBA Europe $1M For Breaking Contract In '12

A Luxembourg court ruled in favor of FIBA Europe in the conflict between the continental organization and EuroLeague, ordering the latter to pay FIBA Europe €900,000 ($1M), according to EL PAÍS. In '04, FIBA and the Union of European Basketball Leagues (ULEB) "signed a commercial agreement regulating the organization of club basketball competitions in Europe." Since '10, EuroLeague Properties "assumed the ULEB's obligation" to pay an annual sum of €400,000 ($448,000) to FIBA Europe. But EuroLeague Properties terminated the agreement in '12, due to the "calendar changes that FIBA announced would be effective starting in '17." The ruling by the Luxembourg Commercial Court calls for EuroLeague Properties to pay FIBA Europe €900,000, plus interest, and an additional fine of €1,500 ($1,700). EuroLeague Properties was also ordered to "cover the costs of the legal proceedings." The decision "can be appealed by either party." The court "ruled that the changes FIBA made to its calendar did not represent a breach of the contract" (EL PAÍS, 6/26).

IN ARGENTINA: LOS ANDES reported a FIBA delegation met with Argentine Basketball Federation (CABB) President Federico Susbielles at the site of a 20,000-capacity stadium being built in Mendoza, Argentina. The "stadium will be the biggest basketball arena in the interior of Argentina." The FIBA delegation's visit was related to Argentina and Uruguay's joint bid to host the 2023 FIBA World Cup (LOS ANDES, 6/26).
