Formula 1 Team Sauber's Monisha Kaltenborn Leaves Amid Disagreement With Owners

Swiss Formula 1 team Sauber "parted company" with Team Principal Monisha Kaltenborn, sources close to Sauber said, according to Andrew Benson of the BBC. Kaltenborn has been Sauber's team principal since '12, when she was given the role by Founder Peter Sauber. The 46-year-old, F1's "first and only female team boss," was in disagreement with owner Longbow Finance over the running of the team. Sauber "could not immediately be reached for comment on the move." Indian-born Austrian Kaltenborn, who had worked with the team since the late '90s, "broke new ground" when she was promoted to team principal and CEO five years ago (BBC, 6/21). MOTORSPORT's Barretto & Rencken reported sources suggested that one of the issues "was the treatment" of drivers Marcus Ericsson and Pascal Wehrlein. It is understood Longbow wants to "give Ericsson priority over Wehrlein," but Kaltenborn was not in favor of such a policy. Following "lengthy discussions, the two parties decided they could not find a way forward to work together and chose to part ways." The terms of Kaltenborn's departure "are still being worked out" (MOTORSPORT, 6/21).
