Names In The News

La Liga President JAVIER TEBAS released a statement "denying any fraud, refuting a report from El Confidencial which said that he is being investigated for possibly defrauding Spain's tax authorities" of €5M ($5.6M). It was reported that Tebas committed fraud through his involvement with his Audiovisual New Age AIE business (LIBERTAD DIGITAL, 6/14). ... Real Madrid's CRISTIANO RONALDO said that "sometimes the best answer is to be quiet" in the wake of allegations he defrauded the Spanish tax office of €14.7M. Ronaldo spoke briefly when pressed on the subject by reporters following a training session with Portugal on Wednesday, saying that he had a "clear conscience" (PA, 6/15). ... Argentinian side Sport Club Pacifico defender FEDERICO ALLENDE "caused an uproar" in the country after revealing that he "used a needle to poke the strikers" of top-division side Estudiantes during Sunday's cup game. Pacifico, which plays in Argentina's fourth tier, "pulled off a major upset" when it won 3-2 in Sunday's round-of-32 Copa Argentina game. When asked how he stopped Estudiantes strikers during the encounter in Banfield, Buenos Aires, Allende said that he took a page out of CARLOS BILARDO's book -- Bilardo was the Argentine manager who won the World Cup with DIEGO MARADONA in '86 (ESPN.com, 6/15).
