League Notes: GAA Reveals New Hurling Championship Proposal

The Gaelic Athletic Association revealed a new proposal for the All-Ireland Senior, U21 and Minor Hurling Championships "which will be considered by Central Council next week." The proposals are on a three-year trial basis from '18-20 inclusive and "would see the Leinster and Munster Championships played off on a round-robin basis." The senior hurling Championship would consist of the two provincial championships and a third "provincial qualifier group," with five rounds of four matches in each (RTÉ, 6/6).

Spain's Supreme Court ruled against an appeal by runner Marta Domínguez which claimed that blood-doping tests "violated her right to privacy." The 41-year-old Domínguez was stripped of her '09 world steeplechase title and banned for three years in '15 for blood doping. The court's ruling stated, "Those who practice elite-level sports, participating in competitions organized by official athletics federations, cannot be exempt from undergoing doping controls" (AP, 6/6).

Paddy Power and other bookmakers have been criticized for "taking bets on video game competitions that are popular with children and teenagers." Problem Gambling Ireland CEO Barry Grant said that offering these bets "blurred the lines between online gambling and playing games." He said, "It's a perfect fit for the gambling industry really, people who like to spend a lot of time in front of their screens are the perfect candidates for spending their money on gambling" (LONDON TIMES, 6/6).
