2020 Tokyo Olympics Organizing Committee Discusses Food Waste Reduction

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics Organizing Committee "commenced serious discussions on how to reduce food waste during the two events," according to THE MAINICHI. An int'l tournament on the scale of the Olympics -- during which about 15 million meals are provided -- results in a "considerable amount of food being wasted." With this in mind, the '20 organizing committee is "hoping to implement effective measures to tackle the problem, and if successful, the measures would represent a historical milestone." The "appropriate procurement and storage of ingredients," as well as how to prevent "excessive food preparation" have emerged as "key areas on which to base future measures" (THE MAINICHI, 6/4).

TRASH-PICKING: KYODO reported Olympic race walk Bronze Medalist Hirooki Arai "led the way around the main competition area" for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics on Monday in a trash-picking event "aimed at increasing environmental awareness" in the buildup to the Games. Athletes, representatives from business partners for the Games and those from the Brazilian Embassy in Tokyo were "among the roughly 100 people who took part in the competition-style event," which coincided with World Environment Day (KYODO, 6/6).

DOPING INCIDENT: XINHUA reported the Chinese Modern Pentathlon Association said on Sunday that it respects the decision made by the Court of Arbitration for Sports concerning Chinese athlete Chen Qian. The CMPA announced CAS "found Chen guilty of doping, annulling her result from the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio where she finished fourth," but did not name the banned drug that "brought her down." The CMPA said, "We will seriously deal with the doping incident involving Chen Qian and draw lessons from it. We will show no mercy in the punishment of those responsible" (XINHUA, 6/5).
