Jamaican football side Montego Bay United Chair Orville Powell's "insistence that money owed to his club be paid" has led to sponsor brewer Red Stripe "pulling the plug on broadcast coverage" of the National Premier League, according to Marc Stamp of the JAMAICA STAR. A Red Stripe release on Thursday said, "Due to ongoing issues within the Premier League Clubs Association (PLCA), the company has decided to discontinue broadcast coverage of Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) matches until further notice. We will resume regular broadcast coverage as soon as the PLCA has provided assurances that they have come to a complete resolution." Meanwhile, Powell, whose team played its first quarterfinal at Arnett Gardens without the Red Stripe logo on its shirts, "stood his ground, demanding payment from the PLCA." Powell said, "The league and sponsor have not responded to us about money owed since last year. It seems we don't have any value." He added that he was aware his team "breached the rule with regard to not wearing the sponsor's logo." Powell: "I know that there was a breach, but the PLCA and Red Stripe is also breaching our rights" (JAMAICA STAR, 4/29).
