At least four people "are believed to have died" and many others were injured in a stampede at a game in Honduras, according to the BBC. The incident occurred at a sold-out match between Motagua and Honduras Progreso in Tegucigalpa. A police statement claimed that "too many tickets had been sold." Motagua denied that too many tickets were sold and said that it warned "responsible authorities immediately that fake tickets were being circulated." The club added that fake tickets "enabled people to enter the stadium illegally to watch the final between Motagua and El Progreso -- people who apparently occupied seats that were not theirs, forcing others to leave the area" (BBC, 5/29). The AP reported officials said that thousands of fans trying to force their way into the stadium "stampeded in panic when police fired tear gas." A spokesperson for University Teaching Hospital said that the victims "died from suffocation and multiple broken bones from being trampled on Sunday." About 600 police officers "were guarding the stadium and used water cannon and tear gas trying to push back the crowds" (AP, 5/28).
