It "looks like Perth's new stadium will miss out on hosting the Third Test of the Ashes series in December," with the match set to remain at the WACA, according to David Allan-Petale of THE AGE. The new A$1.2B ($900M) Perth Stadium has "long been in contention to host an Ashes Test between Australia and England as its blockbuster opening event," but with the ground still to be completed, the WACA is "emerging as the surer bet." A statement on the WACA's website said that the venue of the Ashes Test "was still to be confirmed, with both Perth Stadium and the WACA being considered," and tickets will go on sale once a venue for the match is confirmed. A Cricket Australia spokesperson said, "We are working closely with the WA Government and Perth Stadium to fully understand the stadium's readiness and ability to host an Ashes Test as the first major sporting event in December this year, which had always been cricket's preference." A senior government source reportedly confirmed there is "no chance" of the match being played at the new facility in Burswood "and that the WACA will be the venue." Instead, a one-day match between Australia and England will be played at Perth Stadium later in the summer season, "ensuring the ground has ample time to get ready" (THE AGE, 4/29).
