Football Notes: SWPL Side Aberdeen Ladies Face Points Forfeit

Scottish Women's Premier League side Aberdeen Ladies are calling for an investigation after they "were forced to withdraw" from Wednesday's fixture against Spartans. They "refused to travel, saying many of their players were unable to make it to Edinburgh" for the 7:45pm local time kickoff. A club statement said, "We hope and urge that a retrospective investigation is held into the handling of this issue. We feel that we have been punished for living in a more remote area" (BBC, 5/17).

Atlético Madrid is set to make a visit to Ascenso MX "sister club" San Luis this summer, with coach Diego Simeone and forward Antoine Griezmann "having reportedly promised to attend." Earlier this year, Atlético confirmed it bought a share (reported to be 50%) in the Mexican club, as part of a "global expansion of franchise clubs" which is supported by Chinese investor Wanda (ESPN.com, 5/17).

Women's Super League One side Doncaster is "disappointed" by the FA's decision to open applications to all second-tier clubs to join WSL 1 for the '17-18 season. The FA wants to "redress the balance" between WSL 1 and 2 after top-flight side Notts County folded in April. WSL 2 sides have been asked to show how they can "meet the additional license criteria and financial demands at the higher level" (BBC, 5/17).
