Liverpool To Study Expansion Of Anfield That Could Increase Capacity Past 60,000

Liverpool "started a feasibility study into the expansion of Anfield that could lead to the capacity of the stadium increasing beyond 60,000," according to Paul Joyce of the LONDON TIMES. With work on the Main Stand development "due to be completed in the coming weeks," the focus has turned to the "potential to expand the Anfield Road stand." It has a capacity of 9,000 and Liverpool is working on "design, cost, capacity and economic viability options" before deciding whether to proceed with the development. Outline planning permission has been approved and the club said that it does not run out until Aug. '19. Liverpool will also submit a planning application this summer to redevelop its academy base at Kirkby that would "allow the youth and first-team set-ups to be amalgamated on one site." The club is planning to leave Melwood, its training base since the '50s, because it is "too small to expand." Work on the £50M ($64.9M) project at Kirkby "could start early next year" (LONDON TIMES, 5/5).
