Leyton Orient Asks For English Football League Intervention Over Unpaid Wages

League Two side Leyton Orient's players and staff called on the game's authorities to intervene "without delay" over the club's "failure to meet last month's payroll," according to the London TELEGRAPH. The club is "in turmoil on and off the field" as relegation from the English Football League was confirmed on Saturday, while "controversial" Italian Owner Francesco Becchetti and his directors "appear to be in hiding." The Leyton Orient staff and players released a statement last week seeking assurances they will be paid this month and have now "urged" the EFL and FA to "take immediate action after the club's failure to respond." The latest statement read, "Further to our previous statement dated April 19, where we appealed to the club's board of directors, we have been met with a wall of silence" (TELEGRAPH, 4/24). The London GUARDIAN reported Orient still owes four creditors money "despite escaping a winding-up petition after the club paid its debt" to U.K. tax authority HMRC. Becchetti has been given until June 12 to "pay off debts or sell the club," having previously indicated he would inject £1M ($1.28M) to "ensure" Orient survives (GUARDIAN, 4/24). In London, Jack Gaughan reported Leyton Orient staff claim they have been "forced out of their homes" after Becchetti failed to pay wages for March. Those working at Brisbane Road "also fear pay packets for April -- due in four days -- will not arrive either." The club's statement added, "We are extremely concerned about the ongoing situation given the effect of non-payment of mortgages and rent are already resulting in staff having to relocate" (DAILY MAIL, 4/24). The BBC reported Barry Hearn "resigned as Leyton Orient's honorary president." Hearn wrote on Twitter, "Not leaving a sinking ship. More leaving an owner who doesn't play by my rules" (BBC, 4/24).
